2024 ABENY Inc. Virtual Education Convening
ABENY Inc. will present the 2024 Virtual Education Convening on Saturday, November 9, from 1 pm - 3:00 pm. This year's theme is "Cultivating New Voices in the Struggle for Equity and Social Justice." This theme is reflective of ABENY's participation as one of the coalition partners in the creation of New York City's first interdisciplinary, Pre-K - 12 Black Studies Curriculum as outlined in the Education Equity Action Plan.
| Virtual Education Convening KeynoteOur outstanding plenary Keynote Speaker will be Dr. Crystal Bonds, Superintendent of District 29, Queens. Dr. Bonds was the first superintendent to oversee the piloting of the New York City Black Studies Curriculum in a Queens district, and will share the experience, offering her insights about the positive aspects and challenges, as well as how to proceed with a successful implentation. FEATURED SPEAKERS
Nakia Howell-Turner: Principal of PS 254, District 27Q. Principal Howell-Turner is a past ABENY Scholarship and "Woman of Distinction" recipient. Principal Howell-Turner will discuss how her teachers piloted and implemented the units of the BSC. She will highlight in her remarks specifically how her school integrated the BSC within their current curriculum. She states: "As a student of the late great Dr. James E. Turner of Cornell University, it is my privilege to share this knowledge with the next generation and other educators."
Chase Coley: is currently a 9th grader at MS 217 in District 28Q. Chase was one of the winners of ABENY's 2024 Black History Month Essay Contest. Chase was inspired by the life and leadership skills of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Chase will share his abridged essay, titled: "How Hakeem Jeffries influenced African American Progress through Politics, Law and Government."
